Learning and development

We believe in helping you land on your feet.

Even the most enthusiastic animal lovers aren’t expected to know everything about pet care on their first day. When you join one of our retail teams, you’ll receive specialist training to help you feel confident in your role.

All of our learning and development programmes are centred around our firmly held belief that everyone, in every role and at every level, can become an expert.

What type of training do we offer?

Our training is about helping you to find your feet, learn the ropes and do the kind of work that leaves you feeling fulfilled and motivated. After all, we’re here to help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that will help us be recognised as the best pet care business in the world. We want to empower you to provide the best experiences for pets and their owners.

It all starts with our Pet Care Development Programme. This is a 6-month training programme which covers everything from nutrition and animal welfare, to new retail technology and our Pets at Home values. It’s all about helping you get to know us, our products and services, and how we like to do things.

You’ll get fifty at-work hours put aside to learn and hone the skills that will enable you to thrive in our fast-paced pet care centres. Once completed, you’ll be a recognised pet care advisor and receive a permanent Earn As You Learn pay rise – giving you salary-based rewards for taking part and achieving your learning goals.

Over six months, senior-level colleagues also take a 12-day Fearless Manager programme. Here, you’ll master key management skills such as communication, colleague relations, empowerment, delegation, and presentation.

What about specialist skills?

We also offer tailored learning experiences for other parts of the business and for each group of colleagues.

If you decide you’d like to build on your skills further still, you’ll have access to our MYLearning platform which covers all sorts of areas, from mindfulness to pet care. It enables you to choose when, how and what you learn.

Finally, as well as giving you the chance to drive your own learning journey, we’ll support your progression through our different talent pathways. We’re a very forward-looking business, and we want everyone here to be able to play a part in shaping our future.
